They have covered in the book , the major combat actions , in which the women participated . Several of the women soldiers got killed in the action .The reasons for their taking such drastic and unique steps are more than one or the combinations of many factors . Patriotism , some of them followed their husbands or lovers some wished to take the break from the strict rules that governed the life of women of the Victorian society . They wished to avail this opportunity to break free from the clutches of the family and society . Once they entered the battlefronts ,what happened there makes an interesting reading . Some of the happenings seem unbelievable , but the authors have done their research well , to prove their authenticity . This aspect makes the book different from other books .The main theme and purpose of this book is to introduce the women veterans and the difficult conditions in which they operated . Retaining the secrecy of their identity was their main problem . If their identity comes to the knowledge of the higher Officers in the army , they will be discharged from the service . Many were identified after they fell sick .Some secretly languished in the prisons of both the camps , and astonishingly some were discovered when they gave birth .
