Theme , in literature , is an extensive idea in a story or a deeper meaning or moral expressed by a work , may it be about life , the society ,or human nature . Themes are the primary and most often , are the general ideas surveyed in a literary work . Themes are most commonly implied rather than delivered directly thus it is also defined as the underlying meaning of the story according to Encarta Encyclopedia .A theme is not the same as the subject of a work . The subject discussed in Arthur Miller ‘s Death of A Salesman could be disillusionment . But the theme is the general idea of reality versus illusion .Willy was the main character who suffered more than Linda , Biff , and Happy because of the fact that they were unable to take apart reality from illusion as one of the many human nature flaws . Though Willy believed that he and his sons were great men , his flawed character or his human nature distorted his idealistic vision of success and happiness . For years , Willy believed that they will achieve greatly . For example , though Biff was not able to accomplish anything at age 34 ,Willy told others and made himself believe that Biff was doing great things . Willy felt he must live up to a standard which was deemed impossible to reach by the end of the play and only Biff was able to realize who he was and his potential , thus made him escape from the grasp of disillusionment .More importantly , themes are not topics . The dark side of life in rural America as discussed in Susan Keating Glaspell ‘s Trifles could serve as a definition for topic . As for themes , Glaspell ‘s play , Trifles , implied that women were generally regarded as inferior beings . Everything they have , be it the kids they bore or the material properties they earn ,belonged to their husbands . The theme above was depicted by the role of the women in the play Trifles . The theme showed a deeper view or notion of the topic , the dark side of life in rural America , and the society back then so that Glaspell could reveal the treatment of women during the early 1900s . This was achieved by Glaspell through the dialogue between the two women after the murder of John Wright , Minnie Foster Wright ‘s husband . The murder was investigated by the County Attorney and the Sheriff , who both thought that Minnie might have killed John , only that they could not prove it . The County Attorney , the Sheriff , Mr .Hale , Mrs . Hale and Mrs . Peters went into the house , and upon their arrival , Glaspell showed that both men and women have different perspectives . For example , that entire men saw was a messy house that was not properly cared for but still they could not find any motive of Minnie ‘s murder of John . On the other hand , the women realized that Minnie was wronged by her husband who finally snapped and eventually killed John . The men were not able to…
