Endgame comes at the heels of Samuel Beckett ‘s famous work Waiting for Godot . It is not as famous , but it is equally compelling , and much darker than its predecessor . The setting of the story is Apocalypse the world is coming to an end . The story revolves around four key characters : Hamm , Clov , Nagg and Nell . Hamm is “blind and confined to a thronelike wheelchair (Weiss 1 ‘ He is at the throes of death , and he fervently contemplates the meaning of existence . He is not a nice person , upon inspection of his relationship with Clov and his own parents . Clov is Hamm ‘s servant . He is disabled , but not immobile .Even in his condition , he answers every need Hamm has , all without gratitude . Then there are Hamm ‘s parents , Nagg and Nell . They are two people who reside in trash bins , also in the midst of dying but still susceptible to their son ‘s insults . Their world is a single room ,illuminated by two windows that give them a glimpse of an atmosphere of death and despair . In Weiss ‘s words , “With the help of a telescope he views the apocalyptic landscape in the outside world — dead seas , piles of ash (1 ‘ The story ‘s main core lies in the relationship between Hamm and the others . Even at the edge of his life , he is proud and cruel . This very attitude was the reason Clov leaves . He leaves their room , stepping into the dark unsettling world ahead of him . He does not know if he has a future to speak of , but leaves anyway .The story highlights the relationship between parents and children , and how the same thing goes for masters and slaves . Weiss writes , “We are conceived and then forge a relationship with our parents , just as our parents must forge one with us . Fathers give way to sons . Husbands and wives bicker and sustain each other . Masters develop relationships with their servants in a similar way , just as mentors and their protygys do (1 ‘ Samuel Beckett ‘s Endgame is as moving as it is disturbing . It offers a critical look at the relationships we sustain , and tries to make us question the inevitability of existence .Works Cited Weiss , Hedy . “`Endgame ‘ Lets Us Soak up New Energy from Beckett ‘Chicago-Sun Times 13 Jun . 2005 :1 .
