High school is a confusing and difficult time for many students , while others cite it as the happiest time of their lives . The fact that high school experience varies so greatly among students makes it difficult to know just exactly what problem to address in the hopes of making the education provided better for everyone . All students learn differently ,respond to different stimulus , and function at different levels of maturity and interest . The high school structure provides many benefits for students , including social interaction , responsibility building , and a wide array of knowledge to learn . While high school education can be improved in a number of ways , the best way to improve the quality of education is to start with the teachers . By improving the quality and number of high school teachers by offering higher pay and other incentives , all aspects of the education system will subsequently improve along with the education of the nation ‘s young . High school for many students can be an experience that lacks any significant positive or negative emotions , as students drift from class to class counting the minutes until the final bell rings . Most students are intelligent enough to understand the necessity of education , so they battle through the often inane chatter of many teachers who are under-qualified , without passion , and watching the clocks as much as their students . This general apathy from many teachers affects the students , and is a difficult attribute to eliminate by any conventional methods . Almost as important as academic qualifications is enthusiasm .Teachers who are excited by their subject can often translate this to their students . According to Jonah Rockoff , a Columbia University Business School professor who co-authored a study on the effectiveness of uncertified teachers and alternately trained teachers : “Where you went to college and what your GPA was doesn ‘t seem to tell you how good you ‘re going to be in the classroom ‘ In the study , researchers at the Hoover Institution used standardized test scores to measure the performance of New York City students taught by traditionally certified teachers , uncertified teachers , and teachers who enter the profession through alternative programs such as Teach for America and Teaching Fellows , and found little difference . This shows that while uncertified , many teachers may be more qualified to teach high school students than highly credentialed and experienced teachers , if the latter lack enthusiasm for the subject or the students .At a high school in North Carolina , the benefits of enthusiasm as a measure of teaching success can be seen in 24-year-old teacher Rhiannon Reilly . The principal of the school recruited her in a radical attempt to turnaround a failing , low-income school . Ms .
