Describe the political and economic characteristics of feudalism.

“FEUDALISM : Its Political and Economic Characteristics ‘ Feudalism had been a so influential government system in the 9th and 10th centuries that even in the modern days its influence can be noticeably described in some institutions . In the feudal age when the central authority is unable to do its tasks and curb the rise of powers in the local level , feudalism as a decentralized organization comes into play . Hence , this system according to Lynn Nelson is more often than not controlled by the affluent ones , people with wealth and power or by the local landowners who also assumed civil and military powers . Being a decentralized organization , feudal system has no strong , centralized government control and protection in terms of military , legal ,financial , and educational aspect in a moment of danger to safety and security . According to Lynn Nelson the hierarchical structures which is based on the local and regional warlords , or lord of the manor tends to bring confusion to some people . Lord , vassals , serfs , and others who control some plots of land and servants tend to confuse their private rights and public authority . In other words , the difference of the two disappears and the local control is inclined to become a personal and even hereditary matter . Aristocracy then emerged as the local leaders in the feudal age were doing no more than the monarchs had done by considering their territory as their private possessions . The so called aristocracies in the feudal age were usually done on the basis of private agreements , contracts between individuals . “The bond or agreement was a sort of contract , but not a contract in the modern sense . It was an internal , personal bond more that the `external ‘impersonal contracts of today . And it was a moral-political bond more than a financial one (Nelson Lynn , Lectures for a Medieval Survey .HYPERLINK “http /www .the-orb .net /textbooks /nelson /feudalism .html “http /www .the-orb .net /textbooks /nelson /feudalism .html . 1999 ) The local lords during the feudal age had even more become so powerful that they started to take over the lesser lords and their territories .This action could be tantamount to conquest but in the feudal war there rose an agreement in which the conquered had to surrender his lands over to the other and received them back as a fief in exchange for service . Afterwards , the local landlords would have the right to everything and at the same time become responsible for the economic security and safety of the territories and had all the decisions how to utilize all the resources at hand . In this way , they gain more control over the local level and even make their possession more valuable . Feudalism ‘s influence has transcended from many centuries that even in the modern society there are institutions that have retained strong feudal elements . Having in mind the basic characteristics of feudalism ,one can easily observe what has passed on to the society in the modern times .BIBILIOGRAPHY Nelson , Lynn H , Lectures for a Medieval Survey ( 1999…
