Prenatal Diagnosis for Sex Selection : Resolving of an Ethical Dilemma Let us imagine such situation . A consumptive woman living in 18th century has two children . The first of them is blind , the second – deaf ,and she is expecting the third baby . What would the contemporary genetic counselor advise to her in such situation ? The answer suggests itself ,but that third baby was Ludwig van Beethoven ! This example demonstrates that new potentialities of medicine oblige mankind to determine the limits of their actions on their own to reduce their harm while till recently the nature limited them . In 1970s with emergence of modern methods of prenatal diagnostics both the medical community and the society were put into an ethical dilemma (Tong , Anderson Santos , 2001 ,p . 39 . The developments in medical science and technology came both as a boon and as a bane . On the one hand , these advances have brought relief and happiness to the lives of some people while , on the other hand , irresponsible handling and misuse of technology led to some disastrous consequences (Wertz Fletcher , 1989 , p . 24 . An example of the irresponsible misuse of a genetic technology is the use of amniocentesis , chorionic villi sampling (CVS ) and other prenatal diagnostic procedures like ultrasound for sex detection leading to sex selection (Stoller , 1997 , p . 123 . Now prenatal testing for sex selection is involved in the ethical debate which Kolker and Burke (1994 ) called “a tug of war between the rights and autonomy of parents ,the needs of the community , and ethical concerns (p . 172 . Thus , the genetic counselors had to assume responsibility to resolve this ethical dilemma which is not easy taking into account that they have to observe the fundamental principles of medicine such as respect for autonomy ,non-maleficence , beneficence , and justice (Tong , Anderson Santos ,2001 , p . 40 .The purpose of this study is to consider the case of prenatal diagnosis for sex selection and to find out the ways of resolving the ethical dilemma it involves . Toward this end we will analyze the case , explore the ethical aspects of prenatal diagnosis for sex selection , consider the reasons justifying application of it (if any , examine consequences of such applications both for the certain person and for the society ,and make the conclusion .In our case we have a woman who insists on determination of the sex of the baby she is bearing . From the case we see that if the prenatal diagnosis shows the fetus is a female , the woman will have an abortion .Here the genetic counselor is in the dilemma : to arrange CVS for this woman to escape abortion if the fetus is a male or to refuse prenatal diagnosis for sex selection regardless of the fact that the women intends to elect abortion if she does not know the sex of the fetus “Prenatal Diagnosis , 2006 . What makes this case especially difficult is in fact the conflict of the principle of respect for client ‘s autonomy with other principles , as well as the problems that…
